What is supraorbital foramen?

The supraorbital foramen is a small opening located above the orbit (eye socket) in the frontal bone of the skull. It allows for the passage of the supraorbital nerve, artery, and vein, which provide sensory innervation to the forehead, scalp, and the upper eyelid.

The size and shape of the supraorbital foramen can vary among individuals, with some people having a single large foramen and others having multiple smaller foramina. In some cases, the supraorbital foramen may be absent, in which case the supraorbital nerve can pass through a notch in the bone instead.

Damage to the supraorbital nerve, such as compression or injury, can cause symptoms such as numbness, pain, or tingling in the areas supplied by the nerve. Fractures or abnormalities of the frontal bone can also affect the supraorbital foramen and the structures that pass through it.
